I believe you will find the attached seminar interesting and informative. If you cannot attend the state sponsored one, and you want Buckley to sponsor one @ your office, I’m happy to organize it for you. By having a clear understanding of Fire-Resistive Rated Duct Design, you can minimize potential problems and a lot of finger pointing will disappear.

The Massachusetts Department of Public Safety is sponsoring a seminar regarding the code enforcement of fire rated ductwork. This ICC Preferred Provider Program instructional presentation will concentrate on the need for symmetry testing of ventilation fire rated duct assemblies.

An Introduction to  Fire-resistive Rated Duct Design

The Department of Public Safety, through ConQuest Fire Spray Rated Duct Solutions, will present a series of 2-hour training seminars on the referenced topic during the month of October. Each session is open to state and municipal building and fire officials, mechanical engineers, architects, building contractors, product installers, facilities personnel and others who may have an interest in the matter.

Among other things, attendees will learn the basics for proper application of Type B, fire-resistive rated duct and enclosure assemblies for compliance with the symmetry, testing and continuity requirements of the 2009 International Building Code (IBC).

Many types of fire-resistive rated duct products are considered to achieve code compliance including; ceramic fiber blankets, non-combustible wraps or batts that are applied directly to duct work, along with endothermic ablative elastomeric coated ducts and other manufactured duct assemblies.  These products are known by many trade names such as: Flamebar, Duraduct, Unifrax and others.

In order to understand product limitations, it is important to understand how different products achieve their fire resistance capabilities.  All products may be applied within limitations of their approvals and\or listings. Instructors of this seminar will describe how to properly apply products and review common pitfalls relating to the varied compliance approaches for the protection of  HVAC systems where applied to life safety applications, such as stairwell and elevator shaft pressurization systems, and examine when the distribution of HVAC duct systems may affect life safety features of the structure, such as shaft enclosure penetration protection of fire resistive rated floor/ceiling assemblies.

Morning and afternoon sessions will be offered on:

  • October 27, 2016 from 9:00 a.m. until 11 a.m. @ The Department of Public Safety Conference Facility, 50 Maple Street, Milford 01757-3698
